The severe economic crisis has resulted in the closure of so many businesses in Greece.It caused the lose of employment for one out of five of the total population and eroded the living standards of millions of people. But at the same time bicycle sales is shifting to its top gear.
Until this economic crisis caught hold of Greece, people were allergic to use of bicycles. But now the high cost of road tax, fuel and repairs cost is forcing Greeks to ditch their cars in huge numbers. The cost of 1 ltr petrol has hiked to 1.72 EURO which is 115 Indian Rupees.
As per the statistics, the number of cars on Greek roads declined by more than 40 percent in each of the last two years. Meanwhile, more than 2 lakh bikes were sold in 2011, up about a quarter(25%) from the previous year.Now also the sale is going on in its top gear.
Shops selling equipment from helmets to knee pads, are spreading fast across the capital like mushrooms.People of all the ages are using bicycle now. The government has started giving bicycles on rent also. The pay cut of most of the employees have forced them to think of using this. No one in Greece even dreams of overcoming this economic crisis in the near future.
